Accessories or Decorative Accents

Accessories are the finishing touches that make your house a home. Their main purpose is to add beauty to your rooms. They add color, design and softness to the interior design.

Accessories include flowers and plants, pictures, baskets, bowls, boxes, clocks, pillows and throws, mirrors, sculptures and vases, placemats, candles and more.

To decide where they should be put look at your focal point and each major item of furniture and consider if anything should be placed on it to make it more interesting.

On a fireplace you could hang a painting or a mirror and place two identical objects such as candles, vases or sculptures on either side of the mantel.

For a sofa you may add throw pillows in patterned or accent colors. Adding throw pillows on each end of the sofa will soften its look.

As accessories for tables you can place bowls, baskets, candles, books, lamps etc. Start by placing one object at a time on the table and move the items around and or add more until you are pleased with the arrangement. Start with the large objects and add any smaller ones.

Wall art should be hung at eye level, if placed over a sofa, for example, it should be about two-thirds the width of the sofa. If you are hanging a group of pictures measure the wall space and arrange the pictures on the floor before hanging them.

To soften the sharp right angles of your corners consider using tall potted plants or smaller plants on tables, sculptures or large vases, floor lamps or a lamp on a table. Decorative screens can also be used to soften corners.

Look for good ideas in magazines and take note of how furniture stores accessorize their furniture pieces.
