My House
If you did not already know my husband and I purchased an old stone house. Before we had even completed the purchased my husband’s uncle, a contractor, was standing by ready to tear up the wooden floors in the hallway and a bedroom; which were starting to sag. The rest of the floors had a concrete base. So we signed the papers and before I got back to the house the floors were gone.
When you start renovating you can run into other problems you did not foresee. Once the floors were removed the plumbing was exposed revealing old galvanized pipes leading from the bathroom to the sewage pit. Of course that meant that the pipes had to be replaced. No sense concreting the floors only to dig them up again later. A stitch in time saves nine.
Therefore we had to find a plumber to come and replace the pipes before the floors could be filled in and concreted. On top of that my husband could not stand the fact that the tiles on the bathroom walls were pink and white and the tiles on the bathroom floor were pinky/brown and white. So down came the tiles on the wall along with the medicine cabinet and homemade shelving that looked homemade.
The plumber came and proceeded to hack out the floor in the bathroom to get to the pipes, which eliminated the pinky/brown and white tiles on the floor. So we had a bedroom and a hallway without floors and a bathroom that looked like a war zone. Not to mention that all the furniture that was left in the house, (none of the furniture was removed before the sale) was now in the 12’ by 16’ living room. The kitchen was the storage site for all the construction materials and equipment.
The first chance we got, we emptied the house of all the furniture that was left behind, including lawn mowers, stepladders, and other yard equipment that had been stored in the closed in porch, and ripped up what was left of the carpet on the floors. Did I mention that the house had not been lived in for approximately a year and a half? There was mildew on all the walls and ceilings. To say it was overwhelming would be an understatement.
